Passport

Your passport must be valid for a period of six months beyond the end date of your vacation in the USA. However, if you are a national of a country that has signed a visa waiver agreement with the United States, as is the case for France, the United States considers your passport to be valid for 6 months beyond its expiry date. It’s best to check the date on your passport, since it’s valid for 10 years from the date of issue. If you travel with ESTA without a visa, the 6-month passport validity requirement does not apply.

The visa

If you’re going on a tourist or business trip for less than 90 days, you don’t need a visa if your country of nationality has signed a visa waiver agreement, which is the case for France. All you need to do is apply for ESTA online, using the form available on the U.S. Embassy website. You’ll be asked a few questions about your stay, which you’ll need to answer truthfully. The ESTA costs $14 and is valid for 2 years (or until your passport expires). If you are leaving for another reason, or if your country has not signed a visa waiver agreement, you will need a visa for the USA.

Security gates

When you pass through the security filter, make sure that your computer, cell phone, tablet and all battery-operated devices are charged so that they can be switched on and used. The customs officer may ask you to switch them on and check that they work and that they belong to you. If they can’t be started, your precious tool may be confiscated or even destroyed!
