Whatever your situation and the reason for your stay in Italy for more or less time: a new position, a new professional opportunity, an internship, a university exchange or simply a holiday, it is important to think about to make sure. What do you need to know about the health system in Italy?
Italy’s health system for foreigners
The cost of your health care in Italy depends on your nationality, your situation, and the length of your stay.
- You are European and live in Italy for less than one year:
You have the option to apply for the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) before your departure. You will be reimbursed under the same conditions as the premises. Be careful, however, as the ceilings are only adapted to public sector rates. However, italy’s national health system is quite disparate by region: the northern establishments, which are deemed to be of better quality, are congested. In addition, laboratory examinations, prostheses, consultations with a large number of specialists are only partially taken care of. International health insurance is therefore required, whether you are simply passing through or planning to stay in Italy for a few months during a semester of study or an internship.
- You benefit from seconded status in Italy because of your employer:
You will continue to benefit from the social security of your home country. However, you will need additional international health insurance to be adequately covered.
- You are an expatriate:
In this case if you wish you can enjoy the same rights as the Italians. For this you need a residence permit, then register with the local health authority (Azienda Sanità Locale) by presenting the following proofs:
- A valid ID,
The Italian system is competent, but waiting times in the public sector are long, the latter being overworked by the number of people to be covered. Expats therefore prefer to resort to private medicine, knowing that a consultation costs between 50 and 80 euros with a general practitioner and up to 150 with a specialist.
It is therefore advisable to take out international health insurance at the 1st euro which allows you to benefit from the full cost of your health care, and to freely choose your healthcare institution.
Should I take out health insurance in Italy?
Whether you are a simple traveller or an expatriate in Italy: we strongly advise you to take out private insurance. Indeed, even if the public health system is generally competent, the waiting times before being taken care of are very long. It is therefore much more practical to turn to private medicine, but the rates charged easily exceed the reimbursement limits provided by social security.
