Is travel insurance compulsory?

This question comes up frequently. In general, although strongly recommended, travel insurance is not compulsory everywhere. With the Covid pandemic, travel insurance has become compulsory in many of the countries we list here. Some countries, such asAlgeria, Russia, China and Cuba, require it in all cases.

For Cuba, Russia, China and Algeria, travel insurance is required to obtain a visa, whatever the purpose of your stay. To obtain a visa for Russia, certain formalities must be observed. We provide certificates of insurance for these countries immediately after your online subscription.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, some countries require insurance to cover Covid and epidemic-related care. For most countries, you’ll also need to provide a“health pass“, which may be proof of full vaccination or a PCR test less than 24 to 72 hours old, depending on the country.

People living outside the Schengen area are also required to take out travel medical insurance if they wish to travel within the Schengen area. Schengen insurance is once again a prerequisite for obtaining a short or long-stay visa.

In other countries, such as Thailand for O-A visas, medical insurance is compulsory. In the United States, J-1 visa insurance is also compulsory. More and more universities require health insurance as well.

Travel insurance – highly recommended
