Famous for its breathtaking scenery and home to Tolkien's famous Hobbits County, New Zealand attracts numerous visitors every year. Are you also willing to go to New Zealand? Here is a short guide to help you prepare for your trip.

New Zealand has a temperate climate. It is a windy country with significant rainfall. Temperatures on the coast are pleasant all year round, varying from 12 to 25°C. Seasons are reversed compared to the Northern Hemisphere.

Summer lasts from December to February, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C. The North of the country enjoys a subtropical climate, favoring water sports.

Winter is from June to August. While the sea softens the temperatures on the coasts, the mountains in the South tell a very different story. Indeed, they may go down to -10°C.

Places to visit

            Northern Island

Auckland is the economic capital and the most populous city in the country. It is a cosmopolitan and dynamic city. Surrounded by beaches, it is a privileged destination for water sports lovers.

Although Wellington is not as famous, it remains the political capital of New Zealand. There, you can visit the Te Papa National Museum and the wild beaches nearby. Mount Victoria and the Botanic Gardens offer the best panorama to observe the city and its surroundings.

If you are interested in Māori culture, visit Rotorua. There, you will find Whakarewarewa (Te Puia) and Tamaki villages where traditional shows are displayed. Also enjoy the Wai-o-Tapu and Waimangu geothermal valleys and their hot springs. Hobbiton is also located in Rotorua, near Matamata. Discover the famous County imagined by Tolkien.

The Bay of Islands is composed of 144 islands with fantastic landscapes. Rich in marine life, it is the ideal place to observe dolphins and whales migrating. Also visit the Haruru Falls.

To end your Northern Island tour, fly over Tongariro National Park. It is home to three active volcanoes: Togariro, Ngauruhee and Ruapehu, and many craters. The beauty of the place made it a UNESCO World Heritage in 1990.

            Southern Island

Christchurch is the main city of the island and the ideal place to observe traditional British architecture inherited from colonization. Another place of interest is the Re-Mall. This shopping mall was built after the 2011’s earthquake, its originality lies in the shops organized in containers.

Queenstown is the island’s tourist hub. There, you will find many hotels, restaurants and bars to enjoy nightlife. The beauty of the place lies in the surrounding mountains and in its view on the Wakatipu Lake.

Warlborough is relatively untouched by tourism. It is the ideal place for travelers willing to hike in a peaceful environment. It is also the largest wine valley in the country, and will thus be a nice detour for wine lovers.

If you are visiting New Zealand, do not miss the Otago Peninsula (near Dunedin). There you can observe unspoiled wildlife, including penguins and albatrosses. This is also where you will find the only castle in the country: Larnache Castle.

 Traditional food

Although New Zealand did not become famous for its gastronomy, it would be a shame to miss out on its specialties.

If one of the best exports of the country is lamb, it is because it is one of locals’ and visitors’ favorite dishes. Therefore, turn to roasted lamb, cooked for several hours in order to offer you a perfect and melting in the mouth dish.

If you prefer fish or seafood, you also are in the right place. I think about green mussels in particular, sizing up to 24cm each, and that only exist in New Zealand. These can be cooked in many ways to satisfy your stomach. Also try the whitebait (small white fishes), fried and accompanied with local beers. Last but not least, let’s not forget the famous Fish & Chips, a British heritage.

Although the dish is called the same, Hangi originally was a traditional way of cooking Māori food. It's a must-live experience during your trip to New Zealand, but you'll need to book it beforehand. Indeed, the cooking lasts for three hours! Nonetheless, the unique taste of food and the cultural experience make up for every second of waiting.

In terms of desserts, the country’s pride lies in the Pavlova, whose creation is disputed with Australia. This dessert made of meringue, whipped cream and fruits will find its way to your welcoming stomach.

Also try out the Hokey Pokey, a vanilla ice cream with pieces of honey cake.

Finally, here are some honorable mentions for local fruits and vegetables: feijou and kumara. The feijou is an exotic fruit whose taste is described as a mixture of pineapple, guava and strawberry. Kumara is a purple sweet potato, which will please both your eyes and mouth.
