Before you go to Hong Kong, have you well prepared your trip? Here are some information to help you organize your trip peacefully.
Hong Kong has a subtropical climate. Temperatures range from 12 to 32°C. Summers are particularly hot and humid, with 80% of the annual rainfall between May and September. Summer is also the typhoons period, especially from July. Winters in Hong Kong are dry. It is therefore recommended to visit the country between October and January, where temperatures vary from 15 to 21°C.
Places to visit
The must-see show in Hong Kong is the Symphony of Lights. This Sound and Light show is held every evening at 8 pm in Victoria Harbor. It is said to be the most important of its category according to the Guinness World Records. If you can, dine on a rooftop restaurant overlooking the show.
Other good spots include the Avenue of Stars, the Clock Tower and Golden Bauhinia Square. The first is the Hong Kong equivalent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with a statue of Bruce Lee and his handprints. The Clock Tower is the point of arrival for the thousands Chinese people who migrated to Hong Kong. The Golden Bauhinia Square contains the Hong Kong symbol, offered by China when it was reinstated in 1997.
A sudden shopping desire? Visit the traditional markets of Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei. For the ladies, we recommend the Lady's Market of Tung Choi (Mongkok), rich of clothes and accessories. Every night, Temple Street transforms into a popular bazaar, full of songs and fortune tellers.
To see beautiful panoramas, head to Victoria Peak or to the Star Ferry. To reach the peak, use the tram: an interesting experience for all visitors. Once there, you will be able to observe the city from the heights. The Star Ferry is another amazing experience to try and offers a wonderful panorama of the bay and of skyscrapers.
If you prefer natural landscapes, it is also possible to visit the surrounding islands. It is not uncommon to meet monkeys and other local animals in these areas. Lantou Island is home to the Tian Tan Buddha Temple, where you can relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
If you are short of ideas, do not hesitate to visit Macau. The boat ride between the two cities takes one hour.
Some food specialties might catch your interest:
- Dim Sum or Chinese dumplings
- Siu Mei, a roasted and lacquered poultry
- Noddles with dried shrimp eggs
- The local street food, notably the fishballs for their texture
- Chee Cheong Fun, rice large pastas to eat with soy sauce or with a spicy one.
- Gai Daan Tsai, or Hong-Kong Waffle
Avoid cultural misunderstandings
Before traveling to Hong Kong, find out about the local culture. It might save you from pitfalls. It’s particularly frowned upon to plant ones chopsticks in the food. This gesture is only used to do offerings for deceased persons. Always put your chopsticks flat on the table. Add to this non-exhaustive list to not touch children’ heads and to never raise your tone in front of locals.
It is not common to bargain prices except in markets.
