Earthquake in Japan and recommendations
Following an earthquake of magnitude 8.9 in Japan on March 11th , 2011, the country faces an unprecedented catastrophic situation. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami that devastated coastal areas of northern Japan. Over 10,000 are reported dead at this stage and thousands of people remain missing.

Japan now fears a nuclear accident since these events have had an impact on a dozen of nuclear reactors. The main difficulties are still focused on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. They result from cooling problems of some reactors. The reactor containment was not affected, but vigilance is still high to avoid any harmful radioactive release into the atmosphere. Preventive measures were taken in close areas.

The probability of an earthquake has decreased. The Japan Meteorological Agency said chances that there is another earthquake within 3 days were now 40% against 70% previously, with an intensity of 5 against 7.

It is recommended not to leave home for people living nearby areas at risk, not to leave their homes for the others and to follow the instructions of the Japanese authorities.
Iodine tablets could be distributed if the threat of nuclear contamination should be confirmed.

For further information, please contact your Embassy.

The MONDASSUR team thinks about all the victims and people in difficulty due to these events.

Here are some basic guidelines in case of earthquake:

Inside:

- Stay away from windows, exterior walls, all furniture, table, lights which could easily fall,
- Shelter under a sturdy table or any furniture or stand under doorframes.

Outside:

- Endeavour to get an open space away from trees, power poles, walls or buildings
- In the car, stop at the roadside and wait inside the end of shaking.

In all cases, you must remain calm, follow the instructions and wait for rescue, if necessary.

If evacuation instructions and / or grouping are given by local authorities, you should join the specified nearest group (usually a park or school). You should then contact your embassy and provide information with the list of present people at the place of reunion, if possible, address and telephone number of persons. Do not forget to specify where you are, as well as date and time.
